New line of eco-friendly glass pendants
We are pleased to introduce a new line of pendants with simple dinosaur motifs and other animal and plant designs inspired by nature. Created from recycled glass in contemporary colors and classic smooth square shapes, with the design on the surface, these pendants are great for the younger set. They hang on a micro-suede cord (synthetic) that can be tied to any length. Each piece comes with a small storage pouch.
The Buzz on Amber
Amber has been very popular this year, both in jewelry and in collector specimens with insects. We often are asked about the origins of amber and the variations in pieces we carry. Amber is ancient tree resin that has hardened and been preserved over time. Baltic Amber (succinite) accounts for about 80% of all amber found, and is the type most commonly found in jewelry. Baltic amber has been used decoratively since the Stone Age (13,000 years ago) and can be found in prominent European crown jewels. The excellent Palanga Amber Museum in Lithuania holds over 28,000 pieces, with more than 15,000 containing insect or plant inclusions.
Insect or plant inclusions can occur in all amber, with many of the finest examples found in the amber of the Dominican Republic, Lebanon and Jordan. With amber dating back as far as 320 million years, the fossil record it provides has been very valuable to scientists.
By Nature Gallery introduces new Geode Splitter
Following a special debut at the Houston Fine Mineral Show this Spring, By Nature Gallery introduced its new geode splitter this summer in the galleries in Jackson and Beaver Creek. Guests can choose a solid geode and then turn the wheel to crack the stone neatly into two halves, revealing the beautiful crystals inside. From the very start, the geode cracking experience has been a real hit with kids and adults alike, providing great photo opportunities as the mystery and surprise captivate young minds! If you have a great picture of an amazed kid, we'd love to post it here!
What is a Trilobite?
Trilobites have long been popular with fossil collectors, and they can be found in a wide variety of places around the world in a dazzling array of structures, sizes and colors. The trilobite, a relative of the modern horseshoe crab, was the first creature known to have advanced eyesight. The condition of their compound eyes, somewhat like the eyes of a fly, is a key feature that collectors look for. The state fossil of Ohio is a trilobite (Isotelus maximus) that reached up to 14" in length. Other species had intricicate spines, eyestalks or horns that capture the imagination. Learn more about trilobites at Wikipedia.
Unfortunately, fossil counterfeiting is very common with trilobites in particular. How can I tell if a specimen is authentic? Fortunately, By Nature Gallery works directly with those who find and prepare these fossils, and assures that all of our specimens are authentic. Read here for more on trilobite counterfeits.
